Moissanite has become one of the most popular alternatives to diamond — and for good reason. It's brilliant, durable and far more affordable. So what exactly is it, and how does it compare?
What is moissanite?
Moissanite is a gemstone made of silicon carbide. It was first discovered in 1893 by the French scientist Henri Moissan, in fragments of a meteorite crater in Arizona. Natural moissanite is extremely rare, so the moissanite used in jewellery today is created in a laboratory, with the same composition and properties as the natural mineral.
Sparkle and fire
Moissanite has a higher refractive index than diamond, which means it bends light more strongly. The result is more “fire” — those flashes of rainbow colour you see when the stone moves. Some people love this extra brilliance; others prefer the slightly more white sparkle of a diamond. It's simply a matter of taste.
Durability
On the Mohs hardness scale, diamond scores 10 and moissanite around 9.25, making moissanite one of the hardest gemstones available. It's highly resistant to scratches and well suited to everyday wear.
Price
This is where moissanite really stands out. A moissanite of a similar size and look costs a small fraction of a mined diamond, so you can enjoy a larger, more brilliant stone without the diamond price tag.
Moissanite vs cubic zirconia
Moissanite is often confused with cubic zirconia, but they're different stones. Cubic zirconia is softer (around 8 on the Mohs scale) and can become cloudy over time, while moissanite keeps its brilliance for life. Both are beautiful, affordable choices — we always state clearly which stone is used in each Glimvora piece.
